ReWRITe TOMORROW
Why Rewrite Tomorrow?
It doesn't have to be the same.
So I had an idea.
It came to me during a service at my church. I don't recall what the message was about but, for some reason, my mind wandered to a simple, yet profound, concept - What if we treated every new day as if it were a story titled "Tomorrow"?
For most of us, "Tomorrow" is just a reprint of yesterday's news. We go to the same job, think the same thoughts, and have the same experiences. Rarely do we make any meaningful improvements to our lives or to the lives of those around us. Of course, it makes sense. Play the same game, win the same prizes. But what if it didn't have to be this way? What if "Tomorrow" could be a new story that we choose to write each and every day?
A new story?
How's it work?
It sounds easy, but can be difficult in practice. It starts with recognizing that we have been living on autopilot. Then, it requires some introspection. What things have we been ignoring? What problems have we been pretending will take care of themselves? What issues exist today that have the potential to greatly impact tomorrow, whether for good or bad, depending on our response?
For me, this process led me to reconsider my views on poverty and homelessness. It led me to reassess how I viewed the relationship between science and religion which actually led to a deeper, more wholesome understanding of some confusing parts of scripture that I had previously taken at face value due to a lack of context. It led me to separate fact from fiction and to understand the global threat of anthropogenic climate change and the toll it will take on those least-equipped to handle it.
Like what?
Woah. Anything else?
My journey into rewriting tomorrow is far from over. Rather, it will be a lifelong process full of new realizations of my shortsightedness and lack of understanding. But I can assure you, thus far, it has been one of the most rewarding adventures imaginable. It's inspired a greater passion for learning, opened up an entire new world of academia, and created a deeper sense of brotherhood with the rest of those with whom I share this planet with. The journey to rewrite tomorrow is not an easy one, but it's well worth the cost.
